This past June 2015, our inaugural Somewhere Over the Rainbow: Conference of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in International Education drew over 100 people from across the U.S. and abroad. The conference was (I believe) the first of its kind, and it was highly successful thanks to the dedication and hard work of our co-chairs and organizing committee at the University of Maryland, including Conrad Zeutenhorst, Katrina Knudsen, Bill Churma, and Eric Izaguirre, as well as the support from numerous volunteers and our sponsors at CET Academic Programs, IES Abroad, the Center for Global Education and Experience at Augsburg College, and the U.S. Department of State’s Critical Language Scholarship Program. Most critically, though, we had excellent presenters who came to us from everywhere from California to Greece, or locally in DC from such contributors as the U.S. Agency for International Development.
As a result of this first conference, we have decided to continue Somewhere Over the Rainbow, this year in the form of a webinar series in April 2016, and we anticipate next year (tentatively April 2017) with another one-day conference. For this spring’s webinar series, we again rely on the many incredible experts and voices across the country and around the world. We invite you to submit a proposal to conduct one of these April 2016 webinars. Please follow this link to learn more and to make a submission:
Proposals are due on February 12th. Once webinars are selected and dates are set, we will begin to get the word out. The webinars will be free. We hope this will be a great way for the many people who contacted us about the conference but who were unable to attend and for those who are just learning about the Somewhere Over the Rainbow family to join in this learning community and professional development conversation to continually enhance the field of international education through LGBTQ+ equity and diversity.
I encourage you to share this message with your email lists, colleagues, and/or those who may be interested to submit a proposal.
