for presentation at ScholarCon

Undergraduate students are eligible to submit research manuscripts, papers, and reports for presentation at the 2016 Research Session at ScholarCon, sponsored by Kappa Omicron Nu.
Research not only bridges the gap between knowledge and experience but has the benefit of laying the groundwork for career exploration and development. The opportunity for undergraduates to participate in a national conference is an added value to the overall educational experience and to the process of self-discovery.

Criteria For Selection – The following five criteria will be used in selecting the papers and reports to be presented:
- Scholarly presentation
- Justification for the study
- Logical organization
- Mastery of the subject
- Appropriate documentation
Specifications – Manuscripts, papers, and reports must meet the following specifications:
- Manuscripts, papers, and reports submitted for consideration may describe student projects or research from seminars, independent studies, research assistantships, or class projects in the student’s major, and must be completed between January 1, 2015 and April 15, 2016.
- Manuscripts, papers, and reports should be from four to six pages in length and the text must be double-spaced.
- List keywords (5-8) on the cover page. The main purpose of keywords is to enable successful searching in a database for the main message of your paper. When selecting keywords always think about how any reader might interrogate the database.
- Only manuscripts, papers, and reports from completed research projects will be considered for the award. Manuscripts, papers, and reports may be submitted once.
- Students who completed their degrees in August 2015 and December 2015 and have graduated are still eligible to be considered for this opportunity.
- APA guidelines (other style manuals may be used)

- Applications and submissions will be accepted until slots are filled.
- A cover page must be submitted to identify the author’s name, address, phone number, e-mail address, name of college/university, name of faculty mentor, name of faculty member who served as the writing adviser, student status (e.g., junior), and parent’s address and telephone for emergency contact. No identification of the author or institution should appear on the pages of the application.
- In the case of multiple authors—student authors are preferred; a professor as a last author is acceptable.
- A committee composed of faculty mentors of undergraduate research will review submitted applications. Selection of 8-12 papers for presentation will be completed and authors notified by May 15, 2016.
- Applicants should understand that selection carries the obligation of presenting the manuscript, paper, or report.
Presentation at URC Research Conference – The students whose manuscripts, papers, and reports are selected will present at ScholarCon. Oral presentations will be 8-10 minutes in length with some time for questions and answers. Presentations may include 4 – 8 transparencies or PowerPoint slides for visual support of major concepts and findings. Presenters are responsible for expenses incurred in attending the research conference. The top two presenters will be awarded a plaque and monetary gift.
The Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation is proud to host the annual Hurston/Wright Award for College Writers, which is the only award of its kind that recognizes Black college writers. The award is the foundation’s first program. It was initiated to support emerging Black artists in fiction and poetry enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate school program anywhere in the United States.
Submissions for the award open January 2nd and close March 1st of the same year. Submissions will be judged by distinguished published authors in fiction and poetry.
Black writers who are full-time students in undergraduate and graduate programs at any American university are eligible to submit a work of fiction or poetry for consideration. Writers are ineligible if they have published books, including poetry chapbooks or fiction narratives, through any publishing platform. Full-time student includes low-residency MFA programs. At this time, students in only online courses of university programs are not considered eligible for the award. Writers must be enrolled full-time in a college or university at the time of their submission.
All work submitted must be original and unpublished at the time of submission. No identifying information such as name of the author should appear on the works of fiction and poetry. Author name and contact details should be on a separate page.
Hurston/Wright does not accept simultaneous submissions of a work for this award. Therefore, we make every effort to notify writers by the end of April whether their submissions were accepted or not accepted. Awards will be announced in May. Award winners and honorable mentions will be invited to attend the Legacy Award ceremony that is hosted in October in Washington, DC.
Works submitted to the competition may be published in whole or in part by Hurston/Wright online or print. In submitting for the competition, all writers agree to give the Hurston/Wright foundation permission to publish an excerpt of their work or the work in its entirety. The author retains all rights for their works.
Hurston/Wright maintains the right to decline any submission not deemed eligible.
The foundation makes every effort to fundraise to make this award a cash prize to support an emerging artist.
All award winners receive a souvenir award and promotion of the artists along with the Legacy Awards.
The Legacy Awards are hosted on the third Friday in October in Washington, DC. The 2016 Legacy Awards will be hosted on October 21st.

The original creative work submitted should be formatted as follows:
No more than 20 pages of fiction, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point font, and within 1 inch margins. Title of work should appear on each page. Minimum of 3 poems. Total poetry submission should have a minimum line count of 120.
