Harvard Forest Summer Research Program in Ecology

Greetings CCURI colleagues,

I am VERY excited to announce a partnership that we have just finalized with the Harvard Forest Summer Research Program in Ecology. This program is an opportunity for students to participate in 11 weeks of mentored, paid, independent research focusing on the effects of natural and human disturbances on forest ecosystems, including global climate change, storms, forest harvest, wildlife dynamics, biodiversity and invasive species. Program dates are May 22 – August 4, 2017

I have been working with Edythe Ellin, Director of Administration for Harvard Forest on this partnership. We are going to be moving forward with a co-sponsored program that will be used to identify qualified community college students for their summer 2017 program. This is where we need your help. If you have students who would be interested in this amazing opportunity, then CCURI and Harvard Forest would like to bring them into the program. The application process is contained entirely online.

NOTE: Before beginning the application process, CCURI would like to identify 10 candidates for consideration in the 2017 program. While we will be giving priority to candidates identified from the current CCURI partner schools, we will consider candidates from any of our Nation’s Community Colleges. We would like to do that as soon as possible so that we can begin mentoring those students through the application process. Harvard Forest WILL be interviewing our candidates for the program as part of our commitment to conduct the pre-screening and mentoring prior to submitting the application.

Time is sensitive. Applications are due February 3rd. I would like to have a conference call with the candidates in January. As you can see below, the benefits package we have assembled is extensive and represents an amazing opportunity for your students. We hope that you can help us by identifying the students that you would like to put forward for the program. For this current year, we can commit to the following benefits for up to 6 accepted candidates, so it is important that you move fast.

Harvard Forest / CCURI Program – Student Benefit Package Provided by Harvard Forest

· Stipend of $5775 for the 11-week session.
· Free furnished housing at Fisher House or Raup House.
· Free full meal plan.

Benefits provided by CCURI

· Invitation to attend the CCURI National Undergraduate Research Showcase in Washington D.C. in 2019. Full travel expenses covered for the student researcher and faculty mentor.

For now, we ask that you forward the following information to me directly (at hewletja@flcc.edu )

Name and email of two (2) faculty who will be willing to provide a reference letter (one of these can be the faculty sponsor):

Once I have this information from you, I will be sending out some information regarding the prescreening and mentoring that will be provided through CCURI, along with some information from Harvard Forest on how to put together the application. As previously mentioned, I would like to identify 10 strong candidates for the pilot program and have a conference call with the group in January. I am confident that this opportunity will open up many more doors for our student candidates, faculty mentors, partnering institutions, and CCURI as a whole. I am looking forward to working with you on this and hope that you can work within the time constraints that we are under.

Sincerely,
Professor James A. Hewlett
