The Norton Writer’s Prize

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The Norton Writer’s Prize will be awarded annually for an outstanding essay written by an undergraduate. Literacy narratives, literary and other textual analyses, reports, profiles, evaluations, arguments, memoirs, proposals, mixed-genre pieces, and more: any excellent writing done for an undergraduate writing class will be considered.

The winner will receive a cash award of $1,500. Two runners-up will each receive a cash award of $1,000.

The deadline for submissions is June 15, 2017.

Competition for the Norton Writer’s Prize is open to undergraduates enrolled during the 2016-2017 academic year in an accredited 2- or 4-year college or university. Employees of Norton and their children are not eligible, nor are children of Norton authors. Please refer to the official contest rules at the bottom of this page for further eligibility requirements.

Each entry must be accompanied by a cover letter on departmental stationery from a nominating instructor. Electronic submissions must include an attached scanned cover letter of departmental stationary. Each instructor may nominate only one student essay. The nominating instructor must provide a one-paragraph summary of the essay’s merits and should type out his or her name, address, phone number, email address, and title. Please refer to the official contest rules at the bottom of this page for more details.

Submissions may be made electronically or by mail. Each student may submit only one essay.

Printed & Mailed Student Essays: must be printed out single-sided and double-spaced with all pages numbered. Entries should be between 1,000 and 3,000 words in length. The student’s name should appear on a separate piece of paper and should not appear on any headers or footers. Students must provide a cover sheet with their name, permanent address (where they can be reached during summer months), permanent phone number and email address, projected year of graduation, and title of the paper. Please refer to the official contest rules at the bottom of this page for more details.

2017 SCHOLARSHIPS to New York State Summer Writers Institute at Skidmore College

Several generous gifts and the Institute’s commitment to access and diversity enable us to launch a scholarship competition each year. The competition is open to students enrolled full-time in undergraduate or graduate programs (including those who graduate in May) who are nominated by their creative writing instructors. Please note the scholarships cover TUITION ONLY. Room and board expenses are the responsibility of the student.

In 2016 the Institute awarded 63 tuition scholarships to students from, among other institutions, Columbia, Fairleigh Dickinson, Hamilton College, Williams, Lafayette, FIT, Miami Univ., Princeton, Boston Univ., Univ. of Arizona, UMass-Amherst, Ohio State Univ., Bennington College, Univ. of Florida, Univ. of New Orleans, Vanderbilt Univ., Univ. of San Diego, Goucher College, American Univ., Emerson College, Brooklyn College-CUNY, Univ. of Colorado, Gettysburg College, Univ. of Nebraska-Lincoln, Louisiana State Univ., Emory Univ., College of St. Rose, and Auburn Univ.

This year the scholarships are offered for two-week and four-week workshops from July 3 to July 28 in fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction. Our teaching staff includes the following writers.

FICTION: Garth Greenwell, Adam Haslett, Mary Gaitskill, Rick Moody, Cristina Garcia, Paul Harding, Amy Hempel, Howard Norman, Adam Braver, Joanna Scott and Elizabeth Benedict.

POETRY: Robert Pinsky, Rosanna Warren, Vijay Seshadri, Henri Cole, Campbell McGrath and Peg Boyers.

NON-FICTION: Phillip Lopate and James Miller.

VISITING WRITERS: Lionel Shriver, Allan Gurganus, Paul Auster, Margo Jefferson, Russell Banks, Ann Beattie, Nick Flynn, April Bernard, Rivka Galchen, Louise Gluck, Mary Gordon, Jorie Graham, Siri Hustvedt, Jamaica Kincaid, Joyce Carol Oates, Joseph O’Neill, Francine Prose, Charles Simic, William Kennedy, Tom Healy, Honor Moore, Victoria Redel and Caryl Phillips.

To nominate students, send an email to writerscholarship@skidmore.edu indicating the names and email addresses (please be sure the emails are current) of those you recommend to us. Only names & emails required. Up to six nominated students from each writing instructor are welcome. We are of course looking for promising writers, and hope to increase the diversity of our student body.

All faculty nominations must be received AT THE LATEST by February 25th. All student applications are due by March 10th. The names of scholarship award winners, along with their schools, will be announced to all applicants on or around MARCH 20th.

35 Word Story Contest!

In order to celebrate Writers & Books’ 35th anniversary, we are launching a very short story contest where the only rule is that you must use exactly 35 words! It’s that simple. Test your creative wits and see what potential lies in only 35 words. Submit one story or submit ten, write in prose or write poetry, whatever you choose–the only rule is that you have to use 35 words!

There are two really easy ways to submit your stories–electronically or in person. To submit electronically, simply email submissions to 35@wab.org, including your name in the email, and that’s it! To submit in person, we have a submission box located inside Writers & Books and postcards with information about the contest to write your story on. Feel free to stop by and take a few, working on them as you choose, as long as you submit them before the deadline!

The deadline for submissions is May 6th, 2016. There will be a reading June 6th where anyone and everyone who submitted should come and read their 35 word masterpieces, and listen to others. We will officially announce the winners then!

Prizes will include being published in our catalog and a choice of some limited edition W&B 35th anniversary swag, including tote bags and pins!

National undergraduate literary magazine for two-year college students

East Fork, a national undergraduate literary magazine edited by students at the University of Cincinnati Clermont College, is open for submissions by current students from two-year colleges. Hurston/Wright Award for College Writers

The Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation is proud to host the annual Hurston/Wright Award for College Writers, which is the only award of its kind that recognizes Black college writers. The award is the foundation’s first program. It was initiated to support emerging Black artists in fiction and poetry enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate school program anywhere in the United States.

Award for College Writers

Submissions for the award open January 2nd and close March 1st of the same year. Submissions will be judged by distinguished published authors in fiction and poetry.

Black writers who are full-time students in undergraduate and graduate programs at any American university are eligible to submit a work of fiction or poetry for consideration. Writers are ineligible if they have published books, including poetry chapbooks or fiction narratives, through any publishing platform. Full-time student includes low-residency MFA programs. At this time, students in only online courses of university programs are not considered eligible for the award. Writers must be enrolled full-time in a college or university at the time of their submission.

All work submitted must be original and unpublished at the time of submission. No identifying information such as name of the author should appear on the works of fiction and poetry. Author name and contact details should be on a separate page.

Hurston/Wright does not accept simultaneous submissions of a work for this award. Therefore, we make every effort to notify writers by the end of April whether their submissions were accepted or not accepted. Awards will be announced in May. Award winners and honorable mentions will be invited to attend the Legacy Award ceremony that is hosted in October in Washington, DC.

Works submitted to the competition may be published in whole or in part by Hurston/Wright online or print. In submitting for the competition, all writers agree to give the Hurston/Wright foundation permission to publish an excerpt of their work or the work in its entirety. The author retains all rights for their works.

Hurston/Wright maintains the right to decline any submission not deemed eligible.

The foundation makes every effort to fundraise to make this award a cash prize to support an emerging artist.

All award winners receive a souvenir award and promotion of the artists along with the Legacy Awards.

The Legacy Awards are hosted on the third Friday in October in Washington, DC. The 2016 Legacy Awards will be hosted on October 21st.

The original creative work submitted should be formatted as follows:

 

Fiction:

No more than 20 pages of fiction, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point font, and within 1 inch margins. Title of work should appear on each page. Do not include the author’s name on the pages of the work of fiction. Include a separate page with the title of the work, name and contact information of author, school and year of study.

 

Poetry:

Minimum of 3 poems. Total poetry submission should have a minimum line count of 120.

Gandy Dancer, SUNY literary magazine, seeks submissions

Calling all fellow brooding writers and tormented artists,

Gandy Dancer, a SUNY-wide literary magazine founded and housed at SUNY Geneseo, is currently open for submissions for our spring issue, Volume 4 Issue 2, and we need your magnificent work! We’re looking for poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, photography, and artwork from either current SUNY students or recent SUNY graduates. We want to hear your diverse and unique voices, and we’re always just as excited to see work that pushes boundaries as we are about work that bolsters and illuminates the time-honored traditions upon which our artistic community stands. Check out our previous issues (available both online and in print) and submission guidelines to get a better sense of what we’re all about.

We look forward to seeing your brilliant words, images, ideas, confessions, stories, sonnets, photographs, and everything in between, and sharing them with and beyond our SUNY community. The deadline for this issue — February 24 — is sneaking up, don’t miss it!

Undergrad Writing Awards

Iris N. Spencer Poetry Awards
Deadline: March 15, 2016
The Iris N. Spencer Poetry Award and Myong Cha Son Haiku Award welcome unpublished, original poems.
Submissions to the Iris N. Spencer Award should be composed in the traditional modes of meter, rhyme and received forms. Both competitions will award a first place prize of $1,500 and a $500 runner-up prize.
The Rhina P. Espaillat Poetry Award celebrates original poems written in Spanish or translations of Spanish poems to English. First prize is $500.
Submission Guidelines:
The annual competition is open to all undergraduate poets who are enrolled in a college or university in the United States.
The author’s name, address, email address, telephone number and the school you attend should be submitted on a separate
sheet.
There is no fee to enter. Submissons may be a combination of poems for the Iris N. Spencer Award, the
Myong Cha Son Haiku Award, or the Rhina P. Espaillat Poetry Award. Multiple entries are accepted.
