Connotation Press accepts submissions


CP_Logo500Connotation Press accepts submissions in poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, play writing, screenplay, interview, book review, music review, video (for spoken word or music or…), etc. Basically, we′re looking at virtually every genre or crossover genre you can create.

Connotation Press only accepts online submissions, and we read submissions all year long. We generally will respond to submissions within six weeks; if you don′t hear back from us by then, feel free to inquire about the status of your manuscript. Please wait for a response before sending a second submission in any one genre.

We encourage simultaneous submissions, but please inform us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere.

We only accept original, previously unpublished work. Translations should be submitted with original texts. Indicate that you have copyright clearance and/or author permission.

If your work is chosen for publication, we may ask for a brief interview, conducted by one of our editors, in addition to a traditional author′s bio and a photograph.

What Digital Formats We Accept

Video Submissions: AVI, MPG, MP4
No PDF Format

Guidelines by Genre

You must include a headshot (jpg, gif, png) and a short bio.

POETRY: Please submit not less than three and not more than five poems per submission.

FICTION: Please submit one story of any length or chapter at a time, or 1-5 flash fiction pieces.

CREATIVE NONFICTION: Please submit one piece of any length or segment of a piece of any length at a time.

DRAMA: Please submit original, previously unpublished full-length plays written in English.  One-acts are also acceptable, but please do not submit more than one play (full-length or one-act) at a time.  Translations, musicals, and children’s plays are not accepted.  All submissions should be typed in standard professional play format. Please include a title page that shows the play’s title, the author′s name, copyright information, and year of authorship.  A cover letter with a brief biography, production history and contact information may also be included.  All submissions should be in MSWord (.doc or .rtf).  To give us time to read your play, please allow six months after submitting.

INTERVIEW: Submit a short treatment about the subject before submitting.

REVIEWS: We will read all unsolicited reviews. However, if you would prefer to submit an inquiry first, we welcome that as well.

VIDEO-POETRY: Please submit one at a time due to file size restrictions on attachments.

UNDERGRAD: For the undergrad section we are asking writing teachers around the world for their best and brightest new writers. Our hope is that the teacher will introduce the undergrad to Connotation Press and assist her or him to compile a submission. When documentation is required for any submission, please use MLA style format.

Connotation Press holds first serial rights for material that we publish. The copyright automatically reverts to the author upon publication. We do not require that material be copyrighted prior to submission. Additionally, Connotation Pressretains the right to publish and reproduce the work in print and electronic or website publications, in the original format or as part of an anthology or compilation, and to authorize third-party online databases that reprint Connotation Press materials to publish and reproduce the work.

13th Floor Magazine seeks writing + art

Submission Guidelines

How We Publish

13th Floor Magazine will be publishing twice a year, at the start of the Spring and Fall semesters. Each issue will be an ebook and print edition sold via Amazon.com. The ebook will be free for the first week of publication, as well as all previous issues. We are a student run and self funded organization, and unfortunately cannot pay authors or artists. Please use this free promotional week to obtain your copy of the ebook.

Publishing to Amazon means that anyone in the world can purchase the ebook and read your work. Our very first issue was read by over 100 people in the US, Italy, Canada, Denmark, and the United Kingdom. It’s a great opportunity for exposure!

Types of Work Accepted

Poetry, fiction, non-fiction, micro-fiction, novella, personal essays, comics, drama, painting, photography, transcripts, epic poems — there are no limits to your creativity. Put your heart and soul into it!

Reading Period

Ongoing. Submission deadlines for individual issues will be publicized.

Submission Format – Fiction, Poetry, Nonfiction

  • Files should be in the following formats: .doc, .docx, .rtf
  • Files should be named as the title of the piece and the genre only (e.g. MockOrange_poetry.doc).
  • Do not put your name anywhere in the document. Do not put your name in the filename. We read blind, so that our editors do not know the name of the submitter.
  • Include a brief bio in the body of your email (NOT in your submission document file) maximum 150 words. How you write your bio is up to you, but remember to keep it professional and as polished as your submission. If your submission is accepted for publication, your bio will be included in the magazine. Bios may be edited.
  • Indicate the genre your piece fits into. For example, prose poetry, flash fiction, micro fiction, noir, short fiction, nonfiction, etc.
  • All prose and poetry should be double spaced and in a standard font such as Times New Roman or Arial.
  • Ensure your submission has been thoroughly edited for spelling and grammar so that it represents your best work possible. We follow the standards of the Chicago Manual of Style 16th edition and Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary.

Submission Format – Visual Art

  • A professional-quality photograph should be taken of your artwork and submitted as a  .jpg minimum 300 dpi. Consider presentation when taking your photograph. For example, if you are taking a photo of your painting, be sure it’s not angled and is cropped appropriately. If you are taking a photo of your sculpture, choose a simple background free from clutter such as furniture and doorways. Photograph using natural or natural-colored lighting to preserve the integrity of your colors. Ensure your image is free of glares that will make it hard to see your work.
  • Do not put your name in the filename. Use the title of your work in the filename only.
  • Include a brief bio in the body of your email (NOT in your submission document file) maximum 150 words. How you write your bio is up to you, but remember to keep it professional and as polished as your submission. If your submission is accepted for publication, your bio will be included in the magazine. Bios may be edited.
  • Indicate the medium your artwork is in. For example, “oil paint on canvas” or “felt, buttons, cotton thread and polyfil in sculpture format.”
  • If your work is chosen for the cover, we may need to alter the dimensions in order to accommodate the cover format. If you do not want to be considered for the cover, please indicate that in the body of your email submission.

Submit to JoLLE, a peer-reviewed journal housed in the Language and Literacy Education department at The University of Georgia

JoLLE is a peer-reviewed journal housed in the Language and Literacy Education department at The University of Georgia.

JoLLE publishes two issues each year: one in the fall and one in the spring. Typically one issue is unthemed while one issue is aligned with the theme of that year’s JoLLE@UGA Conference (held each January or February). To be considered for review and publication, all submissions must meet the journal’s guidelines, detailed on this page. Authors may find it helpful to consider JoLLE’s understandings of language and literacy, outlined below, and to read the current and recent issues.

*We accept un-themed Manuscripts, Poetry, and Art year round*

JoLLE understands “language and literacy” to include not only reading and writing, but other elements such as:

  • the social, cultural and historical contexts of language and literacy learning and teaching;
  • ongoing changes in communication tools and practices in the 21st century; and
  • issues involving first and multiple language acquisition and use, regardless of semiotic systems involved.

The journal publishes the work of educators in language and literacy education, including:

  • Reports of research conducted from various paradigms and perspectives and with diverse methodologies
  • Voices from the Field: articles from practitioners in any genre focused on any aspect of their work
  • Literature reviews
  • Theoretical analyses
  • Book reviews
  • Poetry and art (photographs, drawings, paintings, etc.) related to language and/or literacy

JoLLE does not publish verbatim previously published book chapters, book excerpts, or articles.

JoLLE, as an online journal, welcomes innovative use of digital sound, image, and other representation to accompany articles or as the centerpiece of publications. Contributors are encouraged to make use of data that is not possible to publish in print media for JoLLE submissions, including video or audio data from previously published work that is subjected to a new treatment for JoLLE readers.

Permission to Publish

In submitting a manuscript to the Journal of Language and Literacy Education (JoLLE), you agree to the following terms of publication, which must be acknowledged via email:

Approval and Acceptance: We mutually agree that publication of the manuscript and/or art is contingent upon its acceptance for publication by JoLLE and upon its meeting editorial standards.

Warranty: You warrant that the submission is original; that it contains no matter which is libelous or is otherwise unlawful or which invades individual privacy or infringes any proprietary right or any statutory copyright; and you agree to indemnify and hold JoLLE harmless against any claim or judgment to the contrary. If JoLLE consents to publish your manuscript and/or art, and you consent to publication, you grant and assign to JoLLE for its exclusive use the entire copyright for the work submitted.

Previous Publication and Permission: You warrant that the manuscript and/or art has not been published elsewhere in whole or in part and that no agreement to publish the manuscript and/or art or any part or version thereof is outstanding. Should the manuscript and/or art contain any material that requires written permission for inclusion in, such permission shall be obtained at your own expense from the copyright owner and submitted with the manuscript.

* When the final version of the submission has been returned to the author for approval, s/he must respond via email, the body of which must contain the following:


For manuscript submissions:

I certify that I am the author of this manuscript, and that all information contained within is original with me. I further assure that this manuscript has not been published elsewhere. I assign full copyright of said manuscript to the Journal of Language and Literacy Education (JoLLE) and provide my permission for the manuscript to be published.


For University-Based Research involving Human Subjects:

If JoLLE accepts my manuscript for publication, I understand that I will be asked to submit a copy of the approval documents received from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) as well as the un-signed consent forms completed by participants involved in the research I present.


For Teacher/School-Based Research:
